TMC Music begins pre-production for PBS “Latin Rhythms” special February 25, 2009

March 18th, 2009

Emmy-winning producer Drew Levin of TMC Mediaworks announced today that the TMC Music division of his company, TMC Mediaworks, has initiated pre-production of the division’s initial property, “Latin Rhythms: One World” which will air on PBS in the Summer of 2009. The division will follow up with four more hours of PBS Latin music programming, a pair of 2-hour concert specials starring Ruben Blades and featuring a smorgasbord of today’s and tomorrow’s hottest Latin acts.

According to Executive Producer Drew S Levin, Hector Galan of Austin, Texas-based Galan, Inc. is directing and supervising physical production to ensure that the presentation has an authentic Latin heart. Foreign networks such as BBC and Germany’s ZDF are lining up to bid for overseas rights.

Slated to air throughout 2010 are three additional major-event music mini-series, “Country Roads,” which stars the biggest names in country, “Britsounds: The New British Invasion,” which presents the hottest new British bands now taking America by storm, and “The Soul of R&B” which chronicles the emergence and growth of popular cross-over African-American music.

“Country Roads” brings together for the first time the country stars representing all genres from in your face Outlaw to the smooth Nashville sound. The series punctuates these stars’ concert performances with documentary and candid footage that chronicles the gestation and growth of this multi-stranded bastion of American culture.

“Britsounds: The New British Invasion” takes PBS to the bleeding edge with bands that are breaking new ground musically while breaking sales records on the American charts.

Following on the heels of these two events is “The Soul of Rhythm & Blues” to star top names in these uniquely American music forms. The series explores the parallel birth and explosive growth of Soul and R&B as they grew into several genres centered around the music scenes in cities such as Detroit and Memphis and labels such as Motown and Stax.

Hector Galan, co-producer of the TMC Music roster, like Executive Producer Drew Levin, is another PBS mainstay. Galan not only serves on the network’s Content Committee, but is also the director/producer of numerous popular PBS specials and series.

Drew Levin recently produced the PBS ratings winner “Walking the Bible” that was a huge critical success and was also the network’s top selling DVD of the year.

Drew S. Levin announces ramp-up to PBS series pre-production

February 12, 2009

Emmy-winning producer Drew S. Levin of TMC Mediaworks Ltd announced today that pre-production has commenced on the company’s 6-hour PBS mini-series “The Route to Christianity” (RTC).

The initial two hours of RTC are “The Journeys of Paul” and chronicle his transition from Saul of Tarsus, persecutor of Christians, to Paul, Apostle to the gentiles and perhaps the greatest apostle of them all. Using actual locations, many much as they were then, the series retraces Paul’s steps on his first, second and third missionary journeys, as well as his final and fatal journey to Rome as a prisoner.

The following four hours are “From Christ to Constantine” which explore the rise of the young faith as it grows from the small churches that Paul founded in Turkey and Greece to its spread throughout the Roman world. The series reveals the horror of a series of Roman persecutions of the Christians, and their incredible courage as they clung to their beliefs in the face of torture and grizzly executions in the Roman amphitheaters.

Finally, the series takes us inside Rome to witness the political turmoil of the era as their world is first divided into Eastern and Western Empires, then reunited by Constantine under the banner of Christianity. We meet Constantine’s mother and see the incredible sites she attempted to preserve and protect such as the Church of the Nativity.

Slated to air in Spring of 2010, “Route to Christianity” follows TMC’s successful paradigm proven by the critical acclaim, high ratings and record DVD sales of its predecessor “Walking the Bible.”

“Our paradigm for biblical programming,” says Executive Producer Drew Levin, “is to tell our stories by retracing the journeys of our characters to actual locations, many of which are still in surprisingly good.”

In addition to RTC, Drew Levin has additional programming slated for PBS broadcast next year, both in the biblical/archeological field and in music.

Drew S. Levin announces TMC’s new faith-based programming division

February 12, 2009

Emmy-winning producer Drew Levin of TMC Mediaworks announced today the formation of TMC Faith, the company’s new subsidiary dedicated to packaging and producing its extensive slate of PBS faith-based specials and series. The division’s initial property, “The Route to Christianity: From Christ to Constantine” will air on PBS in the Spring of 2010 as a 6-hour event mini-series.

The series continues the successful format of TMC’s critically-acclaimed PBS ratings winner “Walking the Bible” by bringing biblical stories to vivid life through a historical/archeological approach that uses actual locations and indigenous people who still appear and live much as they did over 2000 years ago.

Slated to air in Fall of 2010 and Spring of 2011 respectively are two additional event mini-series, “The Four Witnesses” and “Women of the Bible.”

“The Four Witnesses” is based on Robin Griffith-Jones award-winning book on the four gospel writers Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Griffith-Jones is the Master of the Temple Church in London, made famous by its use in the hit movie “The Da Vinci Code.” This important book and program puts to rest the idea that the gospels are contradictory and demonstrates that they are in fact complementary.

“Women of the Bible” is a three episode mini-series with the first hour dealing with the women of the Old Testament such as Sarah and Hagar, the second exploring the women of the New Testament including Mary Magdalene, and the third hour looking into the lives of some of the Bible’s most interesting characters, its “Bad Girls” such as Jezebel and Salome.

Co-producing the TMC Faith roster with Drew S. Levin are PBS veterans Palladin Productions of the UK. The director is Bill Cran and the series writer is Ben Loeterman.

“By folding these shows into our new division,” CEO Drew Levin says, “TMC is creating a brand that will fully leverage the ratings and marketing momentum of ‘Walking the Bible’.”

PBS GREEN LIGHTS TWO PRIMETIME MINI-SERIES FROM

TMC ENTERTAINMENT,

WALKING THE BIBLE AND

ABRAHAM: A JOURNEY TO THE HEART OF THREE FAITHS,

BASED ON BESTSELLING BOOKS BY BRUCE FEILER

(Los Angeles—-February 24, 2004) PBS and TMC Entertainment have finalized an agreement to air two three-hour primetime mini-series based on Bruce Feiler’s bestselling books, Walking the Bible: A Journey by Land Through the Five Books of Moses and Abraham: A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths, confirmed Drew S. Levin, TMC Entertainment president and CEO.

Walking the Bible and Abraham – both slated to premiere on PBS in 2005 – will be filmed on high-definition video utilizing state-of-the-art CGI and extensive live-action recreations. Special eight-hour versions will also be released on DVD for on-air and direct-response distribution.

“These are two of the most exciting and challenging projects I have had the privilege to produce. Bruce Feiler has taken the Bible, the sacred document of Judaism and Christianity, as well as the Koran, and translated them into a contemporary setting that allows the reader, and now the viewer, to experience these most precious chronicles of our ancestors, firsthand,” said Levin. “In our upcoming mini-series, we will travel with Bruce as he relives the journey he took to write these two inspiring books. Our cameras will be with him as he walks the sands of ancient Ur and travels the Sinai Desert in search of the holy mountain where Moses received the Ten Commandments, then follows in the footsteps of Abraham, the father of the three great religions,” said Drew Levin. “We are delighted to produce Walking the Bible and Abraham for PBS and look forward to seeing these two vivid depictions of the Bible come alive,” concluded Levin.

Walking the Bible records Feiler’s epic journey through the Holy Land. Along the way, he will cross the Red Sea, climb Mount Sinai and touch the Burning Bush. The second mini-series, Abraham, retraces another of Feiler’s one-of-a-kind adventures: his search for the man at the heart of the world’s three great religions – and today’s deadliest conflicts. Both will be filmed on location in the Middle East, including Iraq, Israel, Egypt and Morocco.

“PBS is proud to bring these projects to its viewers. We have a rich tradition of programming in this genre, from Frontline and its award-winning Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero to an examination of God and Country on a recent Flashpoints USA With Bryant Gumbel and Gwen Ifill. We are also the only broadcaster that regularly examines issues of religion on our weekly series, Religion and Ethics Newsweekly,” said Jacoba Atlas, senior vice president, PBS programming. “These two mini-series will greatly enhance our long-standing commitment to present compelling and in-depth explorations of religion and its place in contemporary life.”

Walking the Bible and Abraham have been on The New York Times bestseller list for over a year and a half, and Abraham graced the cover of Time magazine in September 2002.

“Ever since I worked for PBS as a freshman in college twenty years ago, it has been my dream to present documentaries on the ‘blue chip’ of networks. I am thrilled that these two deeply personal journeys, which have moved and transformed me in recent years, as well as readers around the world, will now reach an even greater audience. I look forward to making mini-series that live up to the spirit of both Walking the Bible and Abraham: taking the greatest stories ever told and exploring them through the intimate, rich prism of the present,” said the author, Bruce Feiler.

Both series will be executive produced by Drew S. Levin and his long-time associate, Jim Coane. Levin and Coane each won an Emmy for their critically acclaimed PBS series, Future Quest, hosted by Jeff Goldblum. Rebecca Dobbs will serve as producer. Dobbs’ London-based production company, Maya Vision International, is best known for its BBC/PBS mini-series, Conquistadors and In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great. Alex Gregory, who won Emmys for The Living Eden and The Secret Life of 118 Green Street, will co-write with Feiler.
